805230 Iron Railroad Signal Lantern In the fledgling days of locomotives, before electricity, railway workers needed a method of communication that could be understood above the cacophony of trains. An integral part of that was the ability to be seen and signal from the tracks themselves via lantern. Typically, these lanterns consisted of a black metal housing, with an interior flame that was set behind clear and colored glass insets.Between the light shining from the lantern and specific methods of waving said lantern, rail workers were able to communicate clearly, over a long distance and even at night.
